While in Nevada- a land with out wireless, I was inundated with wireless articles today.
IBM announced it has developed a germanium based wireless chipset that would enable transfer speeds of upto 10 times the rate we currently enjoy today. This is great news for people who want to do uncompressed streaming HD video through out their home. (article)
I was also more than slightly disturbed to read that the 2007 Federal Budget includes a tax on the short-range “un-auctined” part of the spectrum that is available for free public use. The budget estimates that these “user fees” would bring in an estimated $3.6 billion over the next decade. However, whether “user fee” refers to a fee for vendors or end users is indistinguishable.
RCR Wireless dug up the scoop so check out the whole article
Bonus!
The U.S. government now thinks it can raise an estimated $25 billion between 2007 and 2009 from auctioning off wireless spectrum–up from the original $17.2 billion estimate. Article
I feel that taxing information exchange would be detrimental to the US’s future. One of the things that enabled the tech boom was low start up costs. More variable costs on a start up is bad. Closing off the few parts of the spectrum that are still open is bad. IBM would never have put R&D money into their new wireless chip if they had to purchase the spectrum to run it. These proposals will stifle innovation and economic growth.
