First Snow!

I was super stoked to run into a TON of snow (for September) on top of Mac Donald pass on Saturday night. I have been snowless since I left for California last January- the changing of the seasons is a welcome change (for now)

In other news Tim’s cabin is sick! It is located about 10-20 minutes from Discovery Ski Hill, and is at the base of a now closed ski hill called Wraith Mountain. We did a bit of chainsaw work to clear out saplings that have grown in, and now the mountain is set for our own personal snowmobile powered use! I can’t wait.

I was stoked to have burgers and beers with one of my best friends, Tanner last night. It was good to see you T. Let me know you made it back to Seattle safely.

Advertising Tidbits

Some interesting tidbits on the advertising front.

First, the Montana Meth watch commercials composed 3 of the top 20 spots on Advertising Age’s most downloaded list. This impressive considering adcritic.com is the advertising industry’s most respected site.

In other news, I have been seeing the Barclays commercial titled “Boldly Go” where “unconventional thinking is challenged throughout history.” When I first saw this commercial, I loved it. The cinematography is amazing. But upon seeing it a few more times, I think it is too self-absorbed. I mean comparing financial planning to women’s suffrage? Please.

Innocent In London

Thursday, September 22nd, 2005

This is an amazing article. The world is changing.

‘LONDON (Reuters): - A London underground train station was evacuated and part of a main east-west line closed in a security alert on Thursday, three weeks after suicide bombers killed 52 people on the transport network, police said. A Transport Police spokeswoman said Southwark station was closed and Jubilee Line services suspended between Waterloo and Canary Wharf in the east London business district.’

From the author:
This Reuters story was written while the police were detaining me in Southwark tube station and the bomb squad was checking my rucksack. When they were through, the two explosive specialists walked out of the tube station smiling and commenting ‘nice laptop’. The officers offered apologies on behalf of the Metropolitan Police. Then they arrested me.

Ebay Buys Skype for $4.1 Billion

Wednesday, September 14th, 2005

I would love to be the guy who created Skype, or Friendster, or just be Craig. See they did the easy part. They created an innovative, amazing, free service on the web.

It is the most simple form of business, if its free, and it grows, then its a success. No need to blame marketing or your sales force for messing up. Sink or swim baby.

I think the crux of the equation is figuring out how to monetize your user base. It is a hard move to pull off, and one better suited to a big company like eBay. I think its a good move to cash out once your online community is valuable enough for purchase.

eBay’s potential reasons for purchasing Skype are outlined in this article on fortune.com.
