In-N-Out Burgers

mmmm… Double Double with cheese.

I visited the coolest In-N-Out today, directly under the landing path for LAX. The runway is literally right across the street. Planes constantly fly LOW over your head. This picture was one of the smallest planes we saw during lunch, the American Airlines 747 that flew over was amazing- the noise made you cringe as it flew over your head.

In-N-Out Burgers have been around since 1948. Growing to over 140 locations in California, Nevada and Arizona. The secret of In-N-Out?

Though times have changed, little has changed at In-N-Out. The menu-burgers, fries and drinks-is still the same basic menu customers have enjoyed since 1948. Everything is still made fresh to order. There are no microwaves or freezers. Customers may observe french fries being made from hand-diced, fresh, whole potatoes. And the shakes are made from real ice cream.

But wait! Is it a secretly owned by the religious right? If you look closely at the bottom of your soda you will find this:

My trusty pal Google helped me find the answer behind the urban legend you never new existed.

So cheers to In-N-Out for using real potatoes, not selling out, and paying their employees more than minimum wage!

Sales and Coupons and Flyers… Oh My!

Friday, March 25th, 2005

Does anyone actually go to the mall for a sale? Does anyone really read the sales flyers in the newspapers? Are sales even effective anymore?

Usually I know exactly what I want when go shopping. A specific shoe or type of pants. Usually I opt for quality (expensive) over quantity (ugly). I would rather get the item that is exactly what I need rather than hunting down bargains.

I have a hunch the response rate for coupons, sales, and sales flyers for people under 30 suck. If I want to save money or get a good deal I order online.

Is bargain hunting a thing of the past? Or does adoption increase naturally with age? Personally I think its a bit of both, but the coupon/sales flyers guys have to be a bit worried. The coupon’s golden days are over. Thoughts?

Apple’s Usability

Thursday, March 24th, 2005

When I switched to an Apple Computer about one and a half years ago I never would have imagined how much my computer usage would have changed. On my old PC I probably used about 5-7 different programs daily; Internet Explorer, Napster, Winamp, Windows Media Player, and Microsoft Office. Thats it. Thats all I used my computer for.

Today I counted all the programs I have on my Powerbook. I was amazed to find out I 72 different programs (not including the Utilities) loaded on the Apple right now. I don’t use all of them every day, and there is a bit overlap, ie. Fireworks and Illustrator, but atleast 50 of them I use at least weekly if not daily.

For me to be able to remember and implement the uses for 50 different programs is pretty amazing. It is also a testament to how far User Interface Design has come.

Tons of my programs are very use-specific. I use the Version Tracker website all the time. It is filled with freeware, shareware, and commercial software. If you need a random program like an alarm clock or a CRM program this is a great place to start.

How many programs do you have/use? What are your favorite programs?

My First Earth Quake!

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2005

Well it only took about six weeks for my first earthquake to hit L.A. The quake hit Today (3-22-05) at 4:06 PM. Weighing in at a meager 3.4 Magnitude. The wave hit the house at about the same time a violent thunderstorm was raging outside. I thought it was really strong thunder; it felt like a percussion wave hit the house.

The quake lasted less than a second and felt like two big thumps hit the house. The crazy part was I instinctively looked at the wall, almost exactly inline with the epicenter of the quake; I felt, then looked directly at where the quake came from.

I thought it was pretty rare for me to be in an earthquake this soon after moving down to L.A. It turns out however that there are tons of quakes in CA. This week alone there have been 300 quakes in S. California alone!

Check this Wikipedia entry for some richter scale info.

The USGS has a sweet sight for keeping track of quakes… check it out!

The Worst Soccer Team. Ever.

The Worst Soccer Team Ever

I was super excited to get on a team for the Dawn till Dusk Classic, an indoor soccer tournament held in Upland, CA. But some revelations quickly dawned on me about 2 minutes into our first game.

3 of our players had never played competitive soccer. Ever.
The 19 other men’s teams in the tournament played ONLY competitive soccer.

Needless to say we got spanked. I think we were outscored 27-1 after our three 20 minute round-robin games were finished.

I must say we had the coolest jerseys though. The light one had a big Kettle One Vodka bottle on it and the darks had the Kahlua logo. Our theme was the Big Lebowski and White Russians; our team name was “The Dudes Futbol Club”
